Handmade Cinnamon Ornaments

Every year at Christmastime my boys and I made homemade cinnamon ornaments. They are beautiful handmade gifts for kids to give their grandparents, teachers, neighbors, etc.
Cinnamon ornaments are easy to make with just two ingredients, and they smell wonderful. This has become a fun tradition in our home that I hope continues, even when my little guys aren't so little anymore.
Cinnamon Ornaments
recipe from McCormick

You will need:
3/4 cup applesauce
4 oz ground cinnamon
Cookie cutters
Drinking straw
Colorful ribbon

Directions:
Preheat oven to 200°F.
Mix applesauce and cinnamon in small bowl until a smooth ball of dough is formed. You may need use your hands to incorporate all of the cinnamon. Using about 1/4 of the dough at a time, roll dough to 1/4-inch to 1/3-inch thickness between two sheets of plastic wrap. Peel off top sheet of plastic wrap. Cut dough into desired shapes with 2- to 3-inch cookie cutters. Make a hole at top of ornament with drinking straw. Place ornaments on lined baking sheet. Bake 2 1/2 hours. Cool ornaments on wire rack. Let the ornaments continue to dry overnight. Insert ribbon through holes and tie to hang.
Start a new tradition with your kids; they will love making these ornaments to decorate your tree, or to give as gifts.

  1. made this today and the dough was very wet. I had to add flour to it. I like the idea but the making it was a problem.
